Greenville, S. C. Downtown Airport
The Greenville, S.C. is the old Commerical Passenger Airport for Greenville, (which has several airports in the area) before Greenville International Airport was built. It is inadequate for modern jumbo jets and just about anything that is MORE than a light or medium. Traffic is usually light and the airport is primarily used by Stevens Aviation and Flight Schools along with private aircraft and helicopters parked there. The runway configuration, which is a crucifixion cross shape create some dangerous take off and landing patterns/conditions in that the two runways cross each other. For propeller aircraft, this airport is ideal since they do not demand long runways to land. The short runway is 0.74 mile long and the long runways is 1.00 mile long. Light to medium Jets do land here but in view of the private jet crash in Colombia, S.C. in 2008; short runways for jet craft can be hardly recommended particularly anything larger than light jets. The GSP Intenational Airport and Donaldson Center Airport should be considered for larger craft if not GSP and are highly recommended. The chief problem with the Donaldson Center Airport is that it is used primarily by Lockheed Corporation Aircraft which seems to have first rights here. The runways are longer: the longest being 1.48 miles and the shortest being 1.01 miles. The runways DO NOT cross and therefore are safer than the Downtown airport. Donaldson Center is located 7 miles from downtown and GSP is located 15 miles from downtown. Large Jumbo double decker jets have landed there. This airport has never had a crash there in 40 plus years but has been the site for troubled planes making emergency landings there. It is one of the most beautiful airports in the World. Donaldson Center is the location of the former US Airforce Base that was de-commissioned about 1960 and is owned by the City of Greenville. It is basically and Industrial Park. The safety record of this airport is that in over 60 years there has been only one major crash on Pleasantburg Drive with a plane trying to land. This plane landed about a 1/2 mile of the airport There have been less than 20 small aircraft crashes piloted by student pilots with circa one fatality. Aside from this, the airport has been the departure point for crashes elsewhere most notably the 1977 crash of the plane carrying the Lynyrd Skynyrd Band.
