Bicycle Lake Army Air Field Reviews (1)
Mar 22nd 1962. I was leading a flight of 4 F-100D aircraft out of George AFB. During an air to air gunnery mission over Leach Lake my engine flamed out. I had briefed if a dire emergency occurred Bicycle lake was 20 miles to the South. A flamed out approach and landing was performed at Bicyle Lake with no damage to my aircraft. The flameout was caused by failure of the engine driven fuel pump which provided pressure to the normal and emergency systems. Two US Army Officers from Ft. Irwin took me to their club where we had a beer. This year was the 50th anniversary of that flight. An event I’ll never forget.
