Wake Island Airfield Reviews (3)
In April 1971, my military-chartered flight from Travis AFB to Guam was diverted to Wake Island Airfield due to an engine fire on our Boeing 707. They disembarked passengers and taxied the aircraft to the far end of the runway where PanAm mechanics worked on it for about 5 hours … after which we resumed our flight. The funniest sight I saw was a single palm tree surrounded by a short white fence – with a sign in front reading “Wake Island National Forest.”
Wake Island Airport
I landed at Wake in 2002. There is one small airport building with gift shop and WWII museum, one bar and restaurant, little else. There are beautiful beaches and interesting WWII emplacements.
I landed on Wake in 1954 when it was a regular refueling stop between HNL and GUM, on my way from SFO to MNL.
I remember getting off and roaming around looking for sea shells while the Pan Am Clipper was refueled. There wasn’t much there except for a few other planes – wish I had taken some pictures.
