In 1964, I was posted to Tabora Airport as Engineer-in-Charge. The area surrounding this airport was unique from the point of Radio reception & transmission. Throw a small piece of wire from the back of your home radio, and you’d be surprised what you’d pick-up. The Airport Tower and hangar, were built in 1942, by the then South African Air Force. The runways had to be long to accomodate heavily laden troop-carriers and materiel, from South Africa enroute to the North African Desert campaign. Though very little traffic used the airport, it was extremely busy as a relay station for all aircraft flying within East Africa. Don’t bother calling Nairobi, Call Tabora and you’ll get through instantly.
