Madeira is well worth visiting regardless of comments about the runway. There is no fright factor as the runway is of adequate length 2777 x 45 m to accommodate all aircraft.
Funchal Airport 1981
I visited the old Funchal airport in 1981. I was cabin crew and the captain invited me to sit in the flight deck jump seat for landing. I can still see it! You felt as if the wing was almost touching the hill on the one side as you approached. I could count the sheep in the field! I dreaded going back there again.

Madeira Approach
My goodness what a load of wooses in previous posts! You should have visited before the runway extension was built and particularly in the wet! Madeira has a great and interesting approach like the old Kai Tak (Hong Kong). It has a 15 degree upslope to the runway at the far end and plenty of wind shear. You don’t want even commercial flying to be boring – live a little and visit glorious Madeira and don’t worry about the much improved airport: there’s plenty of runway! Don’t hanker for Porto Santo airport: it’s a long military runway with a straight in approach – yawn!
Good Airport
I flew into Funchal in September 2008 and it was a good experience both on arrival and departure. However, I had a problem with claiming my luggage which stays in Lisbon (I was flying with TAP from Munich via Lisbon) and it seems that it is a very common problem there, many other people had the same problem that day. But, it’s not a fault of Funchal airport, the people there were very kind and they delivered the baggage to my hotel the same day.

I have flown to and from Funchal many times, I have never heard of an accident, in fact they just extended the runway.
Funchal Airport
I flew in there on a TAP A321. I am an experienced flier but never have experienced the sense of pending doom this place gives. The TAP pilot seemed to land long (wheels touched by the terminal taxiway) and rather than do a go around, went for the landing. Extreme braking brought us to a halt about 50 meters from the end of the extension. Not ideal by a long way. I won’t visit here again. It is just a matter of time till someone doesn’t make it.
Madeira Airport Not That Bad
I have flown numerous time to Funchal from Portugal and the UK, and have experienced landing there before and after the runway extension. I must admit when the runway was only about 2500ft it was a nerve racking landing experience and very much an abrupt stop. Since the extension landing and taking off is a much smoother experience and definitely not worth landing in Porto Santo instead like suggested by the other posts. Pilots landing in Madeira get extra training, so they know what they doing. I do find that TAP air Portugal pilots are much better than other pilots from the UK, for instance, who sometimes need an extra go at landing. If you feel nervous fly TAP and the experience will be much smoother

For the last few years Funchal (Madeira) has a runway that is now much longer. Is is still on a hillside and either end of the runway ends above the ocean. It is now cleared for all aircraft including.
Madeira Airport No More
I’ve flown many times in my life, but never experienced such a place like Madeira Airport. We flew with FlyNiki from Vienna end of August 2006. After having made several turns around the island we approached the runaway from south. There was a party lateral, but mainly front wind. The A-320 tried to touch the ground twice, but it managed to eventually in the third trial, leaving us a very short space before the end of the runaway which ends abruptly 60 metres above the sea. Maybe I’m exaggerating, but only thanks to the strong brakes we managed to stop some 50-60 metres before the end of the airstrip. If you fly to Madeira, you’d better choose the BIGGER airfield on Porto Santo (2,5h away by boat), which is 3.000 m long, compared to Madeira’s 1.800 m.
Great
I am terrified of flying in general. When we got on our Airbus A320 from Lisbon to Funchal, I was extremely nervous. However, the landing was great, and the staff fantastic. It’s going to be a bit more difficult to land a plane in Funchal as compared to other international airports. It’s a small island after all! The airport was very clean and accessible to all with no inconvenience to me or my family. I enjoyed it more so than the bigger ones such as Heathrow in London.
Disabled Access To Aircraft
I visited Madeira in May with my wife and elderly mother; we all had a most enjoyable week on the island. However, boarding the aircraft to fly home was a terrifying experience for my mother, who has mobility problems, and so couldn’t walk up the aircraft steps. She was strapped into a wheelchair and hauled up the steps by two airport staff. This is no way to treat the disabled; it surely should be possible to deploy a lift in such circumstances as these – every other airport we’ve visited has had such a device. We would like to return to Madeira for future holidays, but the prospect of the experience described above being repeated is a considerable deterrent.
Funchal Airport Usability
Until 1999 Funchal airport was every pilot’s nightmare and the world’s most dangerous international airport, only to be accessed by pilots with a special training. The original landing strip was only about 2,500 ft(!) long, with a mountain at one end and water at the other. In 2000 a new landing strip was built, most of which is built on posts in the water.
I was born in Funchal, i had no problems in flying in and out of the island , the pilots are very well trained.
