Two large homemade airport that service the entire Siassi island are now abandon and needed urgent maintenance from the PNG government or any charitable organizations that have interest on the island.
Siassi Airport
I last travelled to Siassi (Umboi Island) in June 2010. Trip to Siassi nowadays is by small ship alone as airstrip to date is still closed, due to growing bush cover over the run way. Rise in airfares and lack of government services are two major factors contributing to the closure of the airstrip.
Umboi Island (Siassi)
I took a small ship to and from Umboi Island in 2004 (to search for the cryptic called "Ropen"). A few weeks later, two of my associates took a small private plane to the island. I know that the runway was used until at least late 2004.
Siassi Airport
I last travelled to Siassi airstrip on a Briten Norman Islander in 2000. The airstrip to date is still closed to all flights due to growing bush covering the runway. Lack of government action has seen the deterioration of this airstrip. People travelling to the island often travel by sea, and endure an 8 hour walk across deep ravines and rivers before arriving at their intended place/village.
I just traveled the island from 15-21 July 2016, Airstrip today can be landed. There is no regular. The only to command the plane to land is charter. This the North Cost Aviation can land. No passenger trips. I am going back next weeks. I am also planning another major trip coming November 2016.
