Rumginae International Airport

Pete Moody, January 12, 2008 at 7:21 pm

I have flown in and out of Rumginae many times. It is used mainly by MAF (missionary aviation fellowship) and SIL (Summer Institute of Linguisticts). The airstrip is maintained by local people and is a major part of the local infrastructure. The strip provides a lifeline for many hundreds of people in the surrounding area, because flying is often the only way sick people can get to the hospital at Rumginae. The airstrip approach is usually from the west, coming in low over the river, where people are often swimming and washing. The people are always sure to wave and smile as the plane flies overhead. A flash of the landing lights on approach really gets them going! It is a grass strip (with many gravel patches), and is often occupied by chickens, dogs, or people. The closest airport is Kiunga, approximately 35 kilometres south of Rumginae.
