Banjul Airport
On arrival at Banjul Airport, a bus will take you from the aircraft to the terminal building. There are 2 queues forming – one for nationals of Gambia and one for others to go through passport control. After you go through passport control there will only be one flight in so it will be easy to tell which carousel your luggage is due to appear. This can take some time to arrive so make sure you have a bottle of water with you as it will be very hot. There will be lots of porters hanging around wanting to take your luggage for you – expect to pay them £1 for their trouble to take it from the airport to your coach. You don’t have to let them take your case – you can take it yourself but be firm with them. After you have your luggage you will have to then join another queue to put your luggage through the x-ray machine. They also randomly search luggage so be prepared for this. Turn right once you get through and there will be your holiday rep waiting for you. If you’re lucky enough to have booked through Gambia Experience, they will be waiting for you with a cool drink, refreshing wipe and a fan! I take with me £5 notes to exchange with the porters for their £1 coins so they can change them into their local currency (Dalasi) – just to be nice! The Gambia is the smiling coast after all…..
Make sure when you’re leaving your accommodation to head to the airport for your flight home to the UK to keep some local currency, as there is no banking facility for UK cardholders to withdraw local currency! Nightmare if you’re dying for a cold drink to cool down and to grab a wee snack while you’re hanging around!
