Lourdes Airport 1954
Lourdes Airport
This is a small but efficient airport, a gateway to the world famous Our Lady’s Shrine and Grotto, Lourdes, which celebrates its 150th anniversary in 2008. Transfers to and from the airport are by coach, taxi or rented car. The airport has a large, well-stocked duty free shop, restaurant and bar area; it is bright and spacious. It is also a gateway to other areas of southern France and the picturesque Pyrenees mountains, which also allow you an easy access across the border into northern Spain and several tourist villages in the mountains which specilise in catering in particular for coach loads of tourists on day trips from Lourdes and other French locations, on shopping expeditions into the Spanish side of the mountains. Lourdes Airport also allows opportunities for short ‘day trips’ or extended journeys, by organised coach or by rented car, east to the southern France resorts on the Atlantic coast and west to th resorts on the Mediterranean coast. After transferring from Lourdes Airport you can enjoy the large town/small city of Lourdes – nestling in a picturesque river valley surrounded by mountains, which also has a cable tram ride from Lourdes up one of its mountains to the breathtaking views. The river flows through the centre of Lourdes, where you can avail of comprehensive shopping, hotels and restaurants, and peace and tranquility of the world famous shrine, grotto and healing baths. It is worth visiting for the shrine, grotto and healing baths alone, and the unique atmosphere of Lourdes, which can be detected from the moment you land at Lourdes Airport. No, I’m not a tourism promoter – just an ordinary individual who enjoyed Lourdes, Lourdes Airport, and that very special area of southern France. Enjoy.
The photo shows two of the three wooden huts which were the terminal buildings in 1955. I was guide for Irish pilgrims on weekly Aer Lingus Dakota aircraft (32).
