I have two different comments about Bole International Airport.
1. The Wifi service – the Airport did not provide any free or even payable WIFI, I think it is really important (because getting an Ethiopian mobile sim card is difficult at the airport).
2. About the regulation that hotel or even friends who want to pick the visitor couldn’t come in to the gate; they can just wait in the parking area; well, I think it is confusing for people who are visiting Ethiopia for the first time.
Good Services!
I have visited Bole International air port a number of times since the new air port opened. The airport is very clean, modern. The customer services are fair. The welcoming approach from the air port personals is amazing. Although, at the immigration waiting time for getting visa is the worst scenario I’ve ever seen. The immigration needed some improvement there. People are flying perhaps 10-15 hours in air so they need an expedited services so they can get rested quickly.
ATMS Banks
There is now a working ATM on arrival in Immigration area next to banks. It is confusing. Screen says only for CBE cards. BUT there are visa stickers on it. Last time i arrived in December it worked on a UK Visa card. but only gave me 2000br. There is a second ATM in public area but as yet it is not working. Bank in departures continues often to be unmanned. I you finish up with too much Birr, change it back at the Hilton banks before you go to airport.
General Quality Of Service
Bole is improving all the time. I am happy about that. What seems to be the constant weakness is the toilets. Some of the faucets are not working at any given time. The staff are really friendly.
Nice Work But
Bole International Airport is working so hard. But still there is a problem at the Information Desk. The problems are: * No-one is there to answer phone calls * No-one is willing to help the customer * And there is a language problem with the securities
Efficient Service
In my opinion, all employees working in airlines are unique because they all serve their customers with out any delay. and and in efficient manner. So I would like to say keep it up. But rarely they give first to foreigners while most of disabled and long waiting Ethiopians are there and this should be corrected.
Bole Is Pretty Nice
I remember the old days before Bole International airport was completely renovated. You had cardboard signs and flimsy plywood desks greeting you upon arrival. Now, you enter a sleek, modern airport complete with decent shops and friendly, fairly customer oriented people. Upon my last visit, custom clearance continued to be slow but you will get through so don’t worry. Taxis are still a hassle. If you want a worry free trip into town and no one is picking you up, take the yellow government taxi’s parked at the terminal to avoid haggling and over-pricing. Also, the toilets seem never to be stocked with loo-role so it’s a good idea to bring your own along with some travel soap. All in all, Bole should be a pleasant experience for most travelers.
X-ray At The Entrance
When entering from the street, there is an X-ray check for all luggage and metal detector frame for passengers. As both cabin and heavy luggage goes to the same x-ray, be prepared for not careful handling. Before visiting the passport officer, you need to fill the departure card. Passport control is a very slow process. Bank/exchange is 2 floors down and they usually don’t have Euros.
Visa On Arrival
I visited Ethiopia in March 2006. I received my 30 day visa at the airport, it was only $20.00 USD. It was quick and simple with no problem at all. The people in Addis Ababa are very friendly.
The Bole Airport will be expanded by Aéroports de Paris Ingénierie. The expansion of the terminal will include the construction of a new passenger terminal as an extension of the current terminals, and the construction of a new VIP passengers’ terminal, among other facilities.
