New Runway
They are currently reconstructing the runway, which is planned to re-open around September 18th, 2006. It will be both longer and wider, making room for larger private planes.
Runway
The runway is in poor condition but it is supposed to be repaired on Tuesday 20-06-2006. They are even extending the runway at the end of the 27. Nice place and wonderful people.
El Portillo Airport, Samana, Dominican Republic
There is only a runway & a very basic "Control Tower". There are no public facilities at all. Not even a ‘phone, so make previous arrangements to be picked-up at the "airport". I have used it many times with no problems. It is perfect if you are going to stay at the El Portillo Beach Resort, the runway is on the other side of the road to the Resort, right opposite. Also it is only 10/15 minutes to the small resort of Las Terrenas. Flying from Santo Domingo is only about 30 minutes against 4,5 to 5 hours by "Express" Bus.
It is the closest to Samana’s capital, Santa Barbara de Samana. A project between the team of developers of Angsana Samana Bay Resort and Marina and Aerodom S.A. has allowed for the modernization of the runway and terminal. With the opening of the new road between Samana and Santo Domingo, locals can drive in less than two hours from the capital of the country, but still flying over Los Haitises National Park and Cayo Levantado is an image to behold.
