Freeport, Grand Bahama Airport
FPO
Freeport International Airport is a very nice airport! The old airport was torn down and a completely new facility was completed in 2005. It’s interesting that you have to go through two x-ray & security check points, but we have never had any trouble. There are cute gift shops, coffee shops, sandwich shops, cafes, a bar and car rental booths and taxi booths. Everyone is always friendly!
Yes, the airport was rebuilt and updated after it was destroyed by the hurricane. Upon arrival, on the far side of the baggage claim area, there are restrooms and the information desk, which we found quite helpful. My boyfriend had forgotten to tell our hotel our arrival time and we were supposed to be picked up by the hotel shuttle (actually just a taxi they contracted with, but it saved us the fare out to the West End). The woman at the desk called the hotel for us and we sat outside on one of the numerous benches, enjoying the tropical breeze and sunshine. When departing, the line through security went pretty quickly and unlike in the US, we didn’t have to take off our shoes! The wait in the departure lounge can be tedious, but they do have a small restaurant offering sandwiches. We ended up buying a small bag at Travelers Palm gift shop to carry some our our last minute souvenir purchases.
