Baniyala Airport

Emily Smith, April 26, 2006 at 10:13 am

Baniyala Airport is a dirt runway that was created by intensive hand labour: digging out roots and then rolling 44-gallon drums half-full of water to flatten the ground. Many of the old people out there still remember the back-breaking work involved and the pride when the first airplane landed there in the 60s. It’s not exactly an ‘airport’ but it’s certainly an impressive and unique landing-strip in a beautiful and remote part of the world.
