Vung Tau Airfield
Vung Tau Airport
Principal use is for the offshore oil and gas industry. Southern Services Flying Company operate a fleet of Super Puma and Russian helicopters. The fixed wing runways look to be in poor condition and remnants of a military facility from the war with USA.
During a recent trip to Vung Tau (FEB/MAR 2011) I visited the airfield to show a friend where we had flown out of with No 9 Squadron RAAF (UH1 helicopters) in support of the 1st Australian Task Force based at Nui Dat. There is no Australian infrastructure left at the airfield. Hangars, hard stand, parking have all been removed. The field is currently used by helicopters servicing the oil rigs offshore. I received a late issue map of Vung Tau from VT Tourism and it shows roads all over the airfield. Apparently the airfield is to be closed and redeveloped (no timeline given) and a new airport will be built on an area attached to and SE of Long Son Island. This too is shown on the map. Connecting roads will be built between VT and the new airport. If you want to see the existing airfield, do it soon before it goes. No photos please or you will get chase away by a guard with a pistol on his belt.
