Choosing the Right Vehicle to Hire
Drivers Under 25
Younger drivers may find that different rules apply to them when they rent a car at Heathrow Airport. All of the above car hire companies have minimum age restrictions in place, and these vary from 21 to 25. Even if the minimum age is 21, a young driver surcharge often applies, and the amount differs from company to company. Certain types of vehicles may also come with different age restrictions. For example, a company may have a minimum age of 21 for a standard car, but a minimum age of 25 or older for a luxury vehicle.
Car hire companies at Heathrow may require different documents, so you should check their websites to find out the exact requirements. However, in general, UK drivers will need to present a driver’s licence, including the photo card and paper section of the licence. Drivers from outside the EU may need an international driving licence as well as their local driving licence. In addition, you may be asked to present your passport, and a valid credit card for payment is often required.
Insurance for Car Hire
When hiring a car at Heathrow, the cost of the car hire will normally include cover for theft and damage caused by collisions. However, if something does happen, you may still find yourself paying a hefty excess. To protect you from paying the excess, you may be offered a separate insurance policy from your car hire company.
Although you may want to have excess insurance in place, it is often cheaper if you buy it from a separate company, so compare some policies in advance to find the best deal. As well as being cheaper, it may also provide cover for items that are not typically included on the car hire company’s insurance policy.
You may also want to consider personal accident insurance, which will cover you and any passengers for medical expenses should you be involved in an accident in the vehicle. Cancellation cover may also be offered, which can prevent you from having to pay a charge if you need to cancel your booking.
Car Hire Extras
Many of the car hire companies at Heathrow are able to provide extras if you require them. However, you are usually required to order these with at least 48 hours notice. Extras can involve:
- child seats
- sat navs
- hand controls for drivers with disabilities
- special assistance for drivers with disabilities
Some companies, like Europcar, may also allow you to pay extra to have your car waiting for you outside of the arrivals area for greater convenience.
Returning Your Car
All of the Heathrow Airport car hire companies have drop-off locations. Some, like Avis and Budget, have two locations. Some will allow you to return your car 24 hours a day, whereas others may have restrictions, so always check in advance. Make sure you return your vehicle with plenty of time to get to the check-in desk, and remember to fill the tank up with petrol otherwise the company will charge you for this, which will normally cost more than doing it yourself.
